Became a National Couple with My Ex Chapter 29: I’m Pursuing Your Daughter
By the time the sky began to lighten, the car finally arrived at South Huai City’s Third Hospital.
Bian Xu went to find parking while Liang Yixuan quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and rushed toward the emergency building.
She ran all the way to the ER, the sharp smell of disinfectant hitting her as soon as she entered.
At a glance, she spotted her grandmother lying on a treatment bed near the door, her forehead wrapped in gauze, her face pale as she slept.
A doctor checking on the patients looked up and asked, "Are you the family member?"
Liang Yixuan, panting slightly, hurried over and nodded. "Yes, doctor. How is my grandma?"
"She has a mild concussion and needed four stitches," the doctor explained. Seeing how pale Liang Yixuan looked, he added reassuringly, "She woke up a little while ago and just fell asleep again. It looks scary, but it’s not serious."
The worry that had been weighing on Liang Yixuan all night finally dropped heavily to the ground.
Her legs gave out, and she reached out to grab the bed rail to steady herself.
Before she could, a hand suddenly wrapped around her waist, holding her up firmly.
Liang Yixuan turned her head and saw Bian Xu. She was still dazed, her brain freezing for a couple of seconds before realizing he had already parked the car and come in.
"What caused her to faint?" Bian Xu asked the doctor.
Oh, right.
In her panic, Liang Yixuan had completely forgotten to ask.
"Preliminary diagnosis is orthostatic hypotension— low blood pressure when standing up. She probably had symptoms like dizziness before. Weren't the family members aware?"
Liang Yixuan lowered her head and shook it.
"It’s not a big problem, but she needs good rest from now on. However, given her age and the concussion, it would be best to keep her under observation for a day or two, run some additional tests to rule out other organic problems or cardiovascular issues."
"Keep her as long as needed. No problem," Bian Xu said seriously, tightening his arm slightly around Liang Yixuan’s waist.
As her foggy mind cleared up, Liang Yixuan suddenly realized — Bian Xu hadn’t let go of her since he caught her.
She pulled her shoulders back and quietly moved a step to the side, looking like she was a bit annoyed by his high-handed, wealthy tone.
The doctor chuckled. "Alright then, go handle the admission paperwork."
After paying the fees and helping settle her grandmother into a hospital room, Liang Yixuan stood quietly by the bed for a while.
Seeing her grandma sleeping soundly, she gently drew the blackout curtains and left the room.
It was the doctor’s shift change time, so the hallway outside was bustling.
Liang Yixuan closed the door softly and sat down on the bench outside.
After a sleepless night filled with anxiety, now that the tension had finally eased, a wave of dizziness hit her hard.
She lowered her head and pressed her fingers against her temples, trying to massage away the headache.
A moment later, a cup of water appeared in her field of vision.
She looked up to see Bian Xu holding it out to her. She took it and said, "Thanks."
Bian Xu froze for a second, lowered his eyes to look at her, then sat down beside her with a sigh that was half amused, half exasperated.
"What are you sighing about?" Liang Yixuan glanced at him. "If you have something to say, just say it."
Bian Xu turned his head away.
Some people were just in a bad mood— what could he possibly say?
Even if he said he didn’t like hearing her sound so distant, would she suddenly start talking to him sweetly? Not a chance.
"No complaints. None at all," Bian Xu said, deadpan.
Liang Yixuan finished the water, glanced at him, and asked, "Aren't you thirsty?"
"Not at all."
His tone was dripping with sarcasm.
Liang Yixuan put down the empty cup, picked up her phone, and stood up, ready to call her dance teacher to request time off.
Before she left, she thought of something and turned back to ask, "Don't you have anything to do today?"
Bian Xu kept his eyes straight ahead. "Of course I do."
"Then there’s no need for you to stay here. You should..."
"Actually," Bian Xu leaned back comfortably against the chair and pointed out the window, "the view from the hospital’s not bad. I’m planning to spend the day finding some inspiration."
"..."
In the end, Liang Yixuan asked a nurse to keep an eye on her grandmother for a while and had Bian Xu drive her back to her grandma’s house to pick up some clean clothes and daily necessities.
They grabbed some breakfast on the way back to the hospital.
When they returned to the inpatient ward, they passed the information desk and heard a nurse say that her grandma was awake.
Liang Yixuan hurried to the room and rushed to the bedside.
"Grandma!"
"Ah, Xiao Xuan..." Grandma Cao Guizhen, lying in bed, waved her over.
Liang Yixuan sat by the bed and leaned in close. "Grandma, does your head still feel dizzy? Does it hurt?"
"No pain, no pain. The doctor came by earlier and said the anesthesia is still working..." Cao Guizhen smiled and squeezed her hand. "The young nurse said you rushed here in the middle of the night? And why did Aunt Fang call you? You’re usually so busy..."
"I’m not busy," Liang Yixuan said quickly. "Grandma, you have to tell me if you’re feeling unwell, okay? Dizziness is no small thing. If Aunt Fang hadn’t heard something and come over..."
"Aunt Fang has a key to our house, and everyone in the neighborhood looks out for each other," Grandma Cao reassured her. "Don’t worry!"
As she spoke, her eyes drifted toward the door, noticing a tall, slim young man standing awkwardly there.
She squinted and asked, "And who's that? The nurse mentioned a young man came with you today..."
Liang Yixuan turned around and suddenly remembered — in her rush to see her grandmother, she had completely forgotten to properly "settle" Bian Xu.
"Oh, he’s..."
The words were at the tip of her tongue when she hesitated for a second.
Given their current relationship in the reality show, she figured the safest way to put it was— "He’s my coworker."
Bian Xu’s face stiffened a little, but he still nodded politely to Grandma Cao.
"A coworker, huh? Such a good coworker, coming with you in the middle of the night. Quick, invite him to sit down," Grandma said warmly.
Liang Yixuan thought of that complicated look Bian Xu gave her earlier while she bought breakfast. It wasn't that she didn’t want to invite him to sit— she was just embarrassed that the old folding chair might be too "lowly" for a rich young master like him.
She glanced at Bian Xu. "Do you want to sit?"
Bian Xu had actually been planning to stay standing, but after hearing her tone, he raised his eyebrows. "What, should I just stand here like a doorman?"
Grandma Cao blinked in surprise and lightly patted Liang Yixuan's hand. "That's no way to treat a guest."
"Grandma, I didn’t mean it like that..."
Liang Yixuan muttered and got up to unfold the chair.
Bian Xu placed Liang Yixuan’s bag and the breakfast onto the nightstand, then turned around and stared at the bits of white dust on the seat.
Meeting his gaze, Liang Yixuan quickly grabbed a tissue and wiped the chair clean. "Teacher Bian, please have a seat."
Bian Xu sat down.
Liang Yixuan opened the porridge container, helped Grandma Cao sit up, and fed her breakfast.
After finishing her porridge and taking her medicine, Grandma Cao started feeling dizzy again from sitting up too long and lay back down. She looked at the two young people and asked, "Have you two eaten breakfast yet?"
Liang Yixuan pointed at the soy milk and custard buns on the nightstand. "I’m about to eat."
"And what about the young man?" Grandma asked.
Bian Xu waved it off casually. "I don't eat breakfast."
There weren’t any restaurants nearby that would meet Bian Xu’s picky standards anyway, and Liang Yixuan knew he wouldn’t eat convenience store food.
She pulled out a bottle of milk from the shopping bag — the fanciest brand she could find at the convenience store earlier — and handed it to him.
"Drink it if you want. If you don’t, call your assistant," she said bluntly.
Bian Xu took the milk, weighing it lightly in his palm.
"Oh, well, getting something else would take too long. I'll drink this for now."
...He looked like he was being forced.
Grandma Cao glanced between the two of them again, still confused.
Maybe because she was dizzy, or maybe because she really didn’t get it, she finally asked the question she had been holding back: "Xiao Xuan, didn’t you used to live with Xiao Jie?"
Since Xiao Jie had a car and could drive, it would’ve made more sense for her to call her at such a late hour, not have a random "coworker" bring her over.
Liang Yixuan answered honestly, "I recently picked up an extra job. A lot of my coworkers are staying in the same building now."
Bian Xu chuckled under his breath.
"Teacher Liang really knows how to phrase things."
With just a few words, she had made everything sound clean and proper, without even a hint of anything inappropriate.
Liang Yixuan frowned and turned her head, lowering her voice.
"Drink your milk. No one’s stopping you from staying quiet."
"..."
Because Grandma needed rest for her concussion, Liang Yixuan stayed with her for about an hour before leaving the room with Bian Xu.
Now that everything had settled down, and there wasn’t much left to do, Liang Yixuan’s exhaustion finally caught up with her.
Bian Xu noticed her bloodshot eyes and suggested she find a nearby hotel to rest for a bit.
But Liang Yixuan didn’t want to go far in case her grandmother needed her, so she decided to just take a nap in the hallway.
The inpatient floor had central heating, and the hallway was reasonably warm.
Liang Yixuan was used to crashing in any corner backstage during long performances, so after leaning back on a bench, she quickly dozed off.
Bian Xu sat quietly beside her, resting his eyes too.
After a while, he suddenly felt a light weight press against his shoulder.
Opening his eyes, he found Liang Yixuan had leaned over in her sleep, her head resting crookedly on him.
Bian Xu’s breath hitched.
He lowered his gaze, staring at her peaceful face.
Her long, thick eyelashes lay quietly against her cheeks, showing no signs of movement — she was sound asleep.
Slowly, carefully, Bian Xu lifted his free hand and brushed away the loose strands of hair falling across her forehead, tucking them gently behind her ear.
He then tilted his head, resting his chin lightly against the top of her soft hair, rubbing it softly before he pulled away with a slight gulp.
He stared quietly at the blank white wall in front of him, straightened his posture, and closed his eyes again.
Suddenly, every sound around him became sharper.
He could clearly hear everything: the quiet whispering of the nurses, the low hum of the air conditioning, the sound of running water from the break room, and the sharp, rhythmic click of high heels against the floor.
The crisp footsteps grew closer and closer— until they stopped right in front of him.
Bian Xu, sensitive to sounds, could tell immediately the person was standing directly in front of him, toes pointed right at him.
He opened his eyes slowly, lifting his gaze.
He saw a pair of scrutinizing eyes belonging to a middle-aged woman.
The woman was wearing a camel-colored trench coat and a light brown silk scarf. Her long hair was loosely tied in a low bun, and her facial features— her eyebrows and eyes — were about 70% similar to Liang Yixuan's.
Their eyes met, and the woman’s gaze still held a hint of scrutiny. Her lips curled into a smile that was gentle, but lacking warmth.
"Hello."
Bian Xu glanced at Liang Yixuan, who was fast asleep, without saying a word. He just nodded toward the woman.
The woman didn’t seem particularly impressed by his reaction, her smile growing a little deeper.
"Excuse me, may I wake my daughter?"
Liang Yixuan suddenly opened her eyes. When she saw who it was, she realized she was resting on someone's shoulder, and immediately sat up.
"Mom..."
Bian Xu even felt a slight shiver run through her body the moment she pulled away from his shoulder.
He raised an eyebrow, feeling a bit uncomfortable, and stood up as well.
Liang Qin glanced at Bian Xu, her smile unchanged, before turning back to Liang Yixuan.
"It’s been a while. Have you made a new friend? Why didn’t you introduce him to me?"
Liang Yixuan pursed her lips and lowered her gaze.
"It’s not what you think."
"Is it what I heard, then?"
Liang Yixuan knew her mother was referring to the reality show.
Her mom didn’t follow online news, so it wasn’t likely that she saw something online. Most likely, she had heard about it from people in the ballet community.
Older artists like her mom didn’t exactly look favorably on such public appearances or entertainment for the masses. What she said might not be very kind.
Liang Yixuan fell silent.
Liang Qin’s smile remained.
At this point, even though it was Bian Xu’s first time meeting Liang Qin, he could guess the general dynamic between the mother and daughter. Considering how Liang Yixuan had never mentioned her relationship with him to her family, Liang Qin’s attitude was already very clear.
Bian Xu massaged his neck, trying to stay patient.
Liang Qin smiled and looked at him.
"Excuse me, sir, may I speak with my daughter alone?"
Bian Xu gave a small smile and said, "If I say no, are you going to stop talking to her?"
Liang Qin seemed surprised by his assertiveness, pausing for a moment.
"Then why ask at all?" Bian Xu shrugged, "I’m a direct person. Let me answer your questions— first, your daughter is currently single. Second, although she hasn't agreed to anything yet, I am indeed pursuing her. So, if you want to talk to her about this, you’re talking to the wrong person. You should be talking to me."
Liang Yixuan’s eyelashes trembled as she looked at Bian Xu.
Liang Qin lifted her chin.
"Looks like you’re willing to talk to me after all."
"Yes, and I can tell you the outcome right now," Bian Xu raised his eyebrows with a smile, "My intentions to pursue your daughter will never be stopped by anyone."
