Don't Cause Trouble Chapter 62: Reversal of Life and Death
Tu Shi remained calm as he told Ye Su to come down.
Ye Su descended from the monument, frowning as she looked at Cheng Huaian and Lian Lian, whose spiritual cores and heart meridians had been sealed. The rune patterns on the previous stone tablets had been difficult to draw, but they had never caused this kind of serious injury.
"Rune formations and the spell formation are connected. There are two formation cores, one on the west side and one in the center," Tu Shi said steadily, holding his staff. "The stone tablets on the west side are mostly broken, and all the deadly energy has gathered there. It's extremely dangerous."
"Senior Tu, what should we do?" Xu Chengyu asked.
"This formation is dead. Without a cultivator at the tribulation level to complete the runes, anyone else who tries will only meet death," Tu Shi said, looking at Ye Su. "There’s only one solution, after I dispel the deadly energy from the western formation, you and the other two must complete the rune patterns on the west side and the central tablet at the same time. Only by activating both formation cores can we reverse the life and death array and leave this place."
Xu Chengyu let out a sigh of relief, there was still a way out.
Tu Shi didn’t immediately begin dispelling the deadly energy from the west side. Instead, he waited for Cheng Huaian and Lian Lian to heal, watching them take their medicinal pills.
"Do you have a dagger?" Tu Shi asked Ye Su.
"Yes." Ye Su took a dagger out from her qiankun bag and handed it to him.
"A mirror?"
"I have one, too."
Tu Shi wasn’t surprised at all. "Of course you do. When it comes to tools, you artifact refiners always have everything."
He sat down cross-legged on the ground, placed the mirror on his thigh, held a lock of his hair with one hand, and used the dagger to cut it off with the other.
Repeating this process, Tu Shi shaved off his messy, graying hair, as well as his long eyebrows and beard, revealing the handsome face of a young man beneath.
Even You Fushi, who was usually half-asleep, turned to look at him. Ye Su, naturally, had also noticed.
Tu Shi stood up and returned the dagger and mirror to Ye Su.
"What’s this?" Ye Su opened the folded stack of neatly bound handwritten notes wrapped around the dagger and looked up at Tu Shi.
Tu Shi answered proudly, "This is a formation I developed over the last two hundred years here. It can rival the formations of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Sect. The last few pages are insights I gained while studying this array."
He paused and added, "I still owe a favor to your grandmaster. These notes are my way of repaying that debt."
Ye Su didn’t seem pleased. She frowned and said, "Senior Tu, such a favor should be repaid directly to my master."
"Your master is your grandmaster’s disciple, and you are your master’s disciple," Tu Shi said dismissively. "You’re all disciples, it doesn’t matter who receives it."
"…What method will you use to remove the deadly energy?" Ye Su suddenly asked.
Tu Shi replied, "Naturally, I’ll use my own method. Do you, an artifact refiner, expect to understand formation techniques?"
Ye Su rephrased her question: "What’s the price for reversing the life and death array?"
There was a long silence.
"To use one’s own body to draw in the deadly energy and redirect the curse, allowing others to live," Tu Shi said, gazing deeply at Ye Su. "That’s the price of reversing the life and death array."
"What does that mean?" Ma Congqiu asked, not quite understanding. "If it saves others, then what about you, Senior Tu?"
"You’re going to use your own life to save all of us?" Ye Su stood in front of Tu Shi, speaking calmly. "You’ve been here for two hundred years. Don’t you want to leave and see the world again? Let’s try to find another way. I’m sure we can all make it out."
"How naive," Tu Shi said, gripping his staff and laughing heartily as he looked up. "A dual formation of runes and spell marks is unheard of. Its killing intent is overwhelming. If it weren’t for you being able to restore the rune patterns, the rest of us would have simply vanished along with the spiritual energy."
This place is a realm, caught between reality and illusion. Unlike places like the Qianji Sect where spiritual energy is simply depleted, here, once the energy is gone, the entire realm—and everything inside it—will vanish completely.
"I suppose my fate was sealed long ago. But at least before I die, I got to meet a new generation. That’s enough," Tu Shi said, clutching his staff and enunciating each word. "To save others is to save oneself. That is the way of the Ten Thousand Buddhas."
While Ye Su and the others were working on repairing the rune patterns, Tu Shi had been studying the stone formation. From the initial spark of inspiration, to the development of several different arrays, to finally discovering the deadly nature of this formation—he hadn’t stopped trying.
Two full centuries. For two hundred years, Tu Shi had held onto hope, continued cultivating, and waited for the day he could finally leave.
The day had finally come but it was suddenly cut short.
After much hesitation and struggle, Tu Shi ultimately made his choice.
There was only one path left to take. If they didn’t act now, the realm would soon collapse and vanish.
"When the Ten Thousand Buddhas Sect selects a new Buddha Child next year, pour a drink for me and tell some stories," Tu Shi said with a carefree smile. "I’ve never tasted wine. Since I’m dying anyway, I might as well give it a try."
Everyone fell silent for a long time. No one replied.
Until Lu Jiu asked, "Senior, you’ve already reached the Fusion Stage and formed your Nascent Soul. Isn’t there still a sliver of hope for survival?"
For cultivators, forming a Nascent Soul meant gaining a second life. As long as the soul remained intact, there was still a chance for reincarnation. For those with great power, even memories could be retained.
But drawing in deadly energy, gathering all the curses. Those were infernal torments no soul could endure.
"Yes, there’s still a sliver of hope, which is why I’m the most suitable one to do this." Tu Shi didn’t voice his deeper thoughts. Instead, he followed Lu Jiu’s logic and pointed at Xu Chengyu and Cheng Huaian. "Besides, these two brats don’t even understand formations. They wouldn’t know how to save others even if they tried."
Originally, Tu Shi had planned to enter the death formation first and only explain afterward when there was no turning back. He hadn’t expected Ye Su to see through it so quickly.
"Senior, if you don’t come back, I’ll study this formation notebook of yours and use it to crush your Ten Thousand Buddhas Sect," Ye Su suddenly said.
Tu Shi: "???"

"I gave it to you because I hoped someone would learn my formation someday." Since it was all out in the open now, Tu Shi no longer bothered to hide anything. He shook his head at Ye Su. "Do you really think formations are as easy to learn as drawing talismans?"
Lian Lian and Cheng Huaian, who had just regained consciousness, silently listened: "…"
"There’s not much time left. I can already feel the realm becoming unstable. Now that you two are awake, keep going." Tu Shi moved in a flash, instantly appearing in front of the western stone tablet. "Ye Su, remember: activate both formation cores at the same time to reverse the Life and Death Array."
He drew symbols in the air with one hand, gripped his staff tightly with the other, and chanted aloud: "All change is one, from Buddha arises the law, life and death shall reverse!"
With the last word, he struck the ground forcefully with his staff.
A surge of deadly energy erupted from the base of the western tablet, completely engulfing Tu Shi, as if trying to tear him apart.
Tu Shi continued chanting, drawing the formation over and over again. All the deadly energy was pouring into him alone.
"Go!" Ye Su said expressionlessly to Lian Lian and Cheng Huaian.
Ye Su took responsibility for the tallest central stone tablet, while Cheng Huaian and Lian Lian resumed work on the western ones.
This time, the two truly weren’t harmed by the deadly backlash. Out of the corner of her eye, Lian Lian saw the monk on the ground remaining completely still, letting the boundless deadly energy flood into his body. Her hand was trembling badly.
Despite having more moments of enlightenment, she hadn’t contributed that much herself. Only completing one and a half tablets. Cheng Huaian had done most of the work.
"…From Buddha arises the law…" By now, Tu Shi’s body had already begun to swell. He was no longer drawing the formation—just standing with his hands clasped together, muttering the chant in a broken, fading voice.
Lian Lian withdrew her gaze, gripped her right hand tightly with her left, took a deep breath, and began to draw the runes—one stroke, then another… It suddenly didn’t seem so hard.
At least, not compared to the pain that Senior Tu was enduring below.
"One, two, three... only two stone tablets left!" Zhou Yun counted aloud.
"A black sandstorm is coming!" Lu Jiu, staring into the distance, immediately alerted everyone. "We don’t have much time!"
This black sandstorm was several times larger than the previous ones. If they couldn’t get out this time, their remains might be left here forever.
